Studies in Digestion

The Healing Virtues of Bad Art

From Buck Wolf, About.com

If you're looking for bad art -- and who isn't? -- here's something that's hard to swallow.

Boston's Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) is auctioning off this beauty -- "Studies in Digestion" -- a wretched portrait of the human digestive system in the styles of artists Keith Haring, Georges Serat, Rene Margritte, and Picasso.

This painting, which I found thanks to my friends at FlashNews, can make you vomit by showing you up close the organs that make you vomit.

It's so bad, MOBA curator Michael Frank says the piece is from their “Rejection Collection” — and that's made up of paintings and sculptures not even worthy of being in the museum’s permanent collection.

As someone who's been struggling for years with acid reflux I find it oddly compelling.

But, of course, this isn't bad art purely for the case of bad art. This work is being auctioned to raise money for Brandeis University's Rose Museum, which is in danger of being shut down.

"Studies in Digestion" might be hard on the eyes, Frank says it would make a lovely addition to a hospital waiting room.
