Woman Crashes Into DMV, Flunks Road Test

By Buck Wolf, About.com

You could say Therese Smith broke a lot of records when she went to the DMV to take her road test. She crashed through the wall and smashed the filing cabinets to smithereens.

The 80-year-old woman from Deerfield, Fla., had been scheduled for a re-examination when she mixed up "drive" and "reverse," slamming her 1990 Mercury into the waiting room at the Deerfield Beach Department of Motor Vehicles, injuring 11 people.

Smith was so stunned her foot remained frozen on the pedal, and the wheels spun in the rubble for several seconds, before she was pulled from the car.

The entire event was caught on DMV surveillance camera, and among those at the scene -- a man dressed as Superman.

Clearly, though, this Man of Steel was an imposter. He stood at the side, while others came to Smith's aid.

It's not clear why Smith was summoned for a re-examination, but clearly it was necessary. By the time she left, she was charged with careless driving. Some, however, were surprised that her driving license remained valid.
