It's hard to think of a sport weirder than rhythmic gymnastics. It's basically very flexible young ladies contorting themselves into all sorts of weird positions while holding a ball. Or maybe some ribbon or clubs.

Rhythmic gymnastics was added to the games in 1984 at Los Angeles, when the Soviets and most of the Eastern Bloc boycotted the games.

Since the most flexible young gymnast types came from the Eastern bloc, a Canadian seized the opportunity to win.

After that, it was all Soviets, Russians, etc.
