Randy Cassingham ‘True’ to Life

'Get Out of Hell' Columnist a 'Stella' Writer

By , About.com Guide

Weird news isn’t rocket science, and Randy Cassingham should know. Before turning his full attention to ThisIsTrue.com, he worked at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

While weird news bloggers come and go, Cassingham’s website has been up and running since 1994, and his weekly email newsletters is said to have subscribers in 200 countries.

Each week, Cassingham hands out “Get Out of Hell” free cards, and he signs off with his own version of an obituary – the “Honorary Unsubscribe.”

Casingham also has some renown for his TRUE Stella Awards, a mocking recognition of the year’s most frivolous lawsuits. The prize was named after Stella Liebeck, the New Mexico woman who spilled a cup of McDonald's coffee on her lap, burned herself, and successfully sued the restaurant, winning $2.9 million in damages.
