Weird Festivals and Events

Sept. 2: Stiletto Sprint

Why do hundreds of women in three-inch heels and very short shorts race? For the same reason people climb Mt. Everest? Because it's there. Oh, and there's also $5,000 in prizes.

Sept. 4-7: Long’s Peak Highland Festival

Nothing gets a lady’s heart racing like men with big spears facing off in knightly battle. That will be the scene at the 32nd Annual Jousting Competition, part of the Long’s Peak Highland Festival in Estes Park, Colorado. The event brings armored Scottish and Irish jousters together in horse-ridden combat to wow the crowd, and a few damsels, with their awesome abilities.

Sept. 5-8: Body Gras

Canadians put a whole new sexy twist on the ancient art of body painting. Artists use models as their canvas, painstakingly painting them for hours, turning them into wild animals and mythological creatures

Sept. 6-7: Big Lebowski Festival

Forget about those Wizard of Oz freaks who doll up as munchkins or flying monkeys. At a Big Lebowski Festival (and there are several throughout the country) fans of the Coen Brothers classic honor "The Dude" -- Jeff Daniels' bowling-loving stoner.

Sept. 23-24: Ohara Hadaka Matsuri (Naked Festival)

As they have done for generations, thousands of naked and nearly naked Japanese men in Ohara rushed into the sea carrying Shinto shrines for the "Shio-fumi" ritual. The stunning display of masculine strength -- otherwise known as "Ohara Hadaka Matsuri" -- is witnessed by huge crowds.
