Competitive eating goes back at least as far as the buffet, and probably started with the cave dwellers' first kill. From old-time pie-eating to today's July 4th hot dog race at Coney Island, the likes of Joey Chestnut (66 franks and buns in 12 minutes), Takeru Kobayashi (20 pounds of rice balls in 30 minutes), and Sonya Thomas (11 pounds of cheesecake in 9 minutes) have become world famous.
