The first adult movie my parents ever took me to was Fidler on the Roof, and as Jews who came to America via Russia, they wanted me to be proud of my heritage.

Let me be clear, in 1972, by my seven-year-old vocabulary, an "adult film" meant a movie intended for grownups.

My Nana had taken me to Herbie, the Love Bug at Radio City Music Hall, but that was a Disney film. Fiddler was a story of the Jewish experience, of how a people maintained their identity and tradition, even while cossacks pillaged their villages.

To be a Jew in czarist Russia was precarious to the point of absurdity, like trying to play a violin on the apex of your roof.

Now, in Florida, we find 42-year-old Bryan Allen Treloar, a different sort of fiddler on the roof.

At 11:30 a.m. several days ago, four witnesses (who were presumably on their way to lunch) spotted Treloar masturbating atop the Pink Panther Nightclub and Showbar in Dunedine.

Treloar -- the newest inductee in the Weird Crime Mug Shot Hall of Shame -- was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior, loitering and other charges, and taken to Pinellas County Jail.

It's yet to be determined whether the witnesses will sue for having their appetite irreversibly ruined.

As for me, I'm now a devote atheist who revels in the absurdities of life. How I ended up married to a Catholic-born woman who converted to Judaism for our secular wedding (and now belongs to a temple), I'll never know. I suppose there's some sort of fiddler on everybody's roof.
