It doesn't get any more odd than today, and that's a mathematical fact.
Today is May, 7, 2009. That's 5/7/09 -- three consecutive odd numbers. That's a calendar quirk we've seen only six times since Jan. 1, 1905, 13 months after the Wright Brothers took to the sky.
Therefore, let me be the first to wish you a happy Odd Day. And to celebrate, San Francisco school teacher Ron Gordon is celebrating with mathmatical Odd Day festivities, with a $579 prize going to the top puzzler.
When Gordon got me on the phone, I gave him one of those "OK, buddy, what are you selling?" cross-examinations, but he convinced me that his site is advertising free and just for fun with numbers.
"We started this back on Jan. 3, 2005," says Gordon. "And it's a great way to get kids to think about math."
Don't worry kids. You won't be asked to do Odd Day math again until July 9, 2011, if I'm doing my calculations right.
Sadly, Gordon says he might have to skip the upcoming Odd Day on Sept. 11, 2013. "It just wouldn't be appropriate to celebrate on the anniversary of 9-11. We'll just have to observe that one privately."
By the way, this photo has nothing to do with Odd Day. It's from the launch of London's Butterfly Jungle, which opened a few days ago. I've been trying to work it into my blog, if only because it's cool. So, unlike Mr. Gordon, let me plead guilty to a little Odd Day opportunism.
But while I'm at it, here's where you'll find more odd pictures:
