Food Prices Too High? Eat a Rat
An official from India's northeast state of Bihar is not joking when he says eating rat meat would reduce skyrocketing food prices. He says he's even encouraging restaurants and five-star hotels to dish up rodent steak.
"The only issue is how people react to rat meat, but I think it will not be a problem," Vijay Prakash, secretary of the state's welfare department, tells the Times of India. "Some socially deprived people in Bihar have always consumed rat meat. If they can eat rats, why can't the rest of the people?"
Of course, this is 2008 -- the Year of the Rat -- and multiple news sources have noted that the risk of bird flu in Asia has sparked a rodent-eating bonanza.
Meanwhile, my wife and I have been watching and re-watching Ratatouille this week. And just as we start to embrace the moral -- "Anyone can cook!" -- we learn the sad truth, especially for Remy: Anyone can be eaten!
