Olympic Committee to Red Army: Lighten Up!

Monday August 11, 2008
Red Army at Olympics Opening Ceremony

Stone-faced Chinese soldiers are scary, at least to one member of the International Olympic Committee, who is telling the stone-faced Red Army to 'Smile more."

Gerhard Heiberg of Norway tellsthe Norwegian daily Aftenposten that he asked Chinese authorities to make an attitude adjustment.

"We think that in particular the military and police can behave in a different manner," he said." The Chinese are scaring the wits out of foreigners. We can't have it like this."

"I've asked them to get people to smile more," he said, noting that his suggestion made some Chinese officials laugh.

Well . . . at least that's a start.
