Gay Women Officially Allowed to be Lesbians

If you're from Lesbos, you're definitely a lesbian, but you're not necessarily gay (not that there's anything wrong with that, as we Seinfeld fans like to say).

Three residents of Lesbos -- a Greek island in the Aegean Sea -- got so fed up with the gay jokes that they filed a lawsuit asking a court to ban use of the word to describe homosexual women.

Now, these three non-gay lesbians could rightfully be called litigious losers. A judge in Athens rejected their request, and slapped them with a fine to pay court expenses of $366, essentially for wasting everyone's time.

"This is a good decision for lesbians everywhere," Vassillis Chirdaris, a lawyer for the Gay and Lesbian Union of Greece, told Reuters. "It was ridiculous."

Lesbos was the birthplace of the 7th century poetess Sappho, who idealized female love. Somewhere, she must be laughing.

The judge told the Lesbos residents that they're free to appeal his ruling. One option might be to change the name of their homeland to "L-word Island."
